Along time ago, when it came to building a house, it was quite enough to simply find a pleasing color and paint the unpainted surfaces.
We have come a long way since then. Today, our houses are works of art. And the walls must be an expressive part of the creative aspects of the design of the house.
To create the art to compliment the How-to House, builder Jason Vander Vorste selected Debra McAtee and her company Artistic Faux & Design to do the job.
Debra was inspired to create faux and other fine home art after seeing a photograph of a mural in a magazine. With that inspiration, she trained Faux Effects International in Florida which was followed by a mentoring program in Kansas.
Upon completion of her training, she returned to Tyler to open Artistic Faux & Design by Debra.
Debra first displays her talent in the kitchen. The cabinets were distressed and then she applied a walnut antique glaze to give them an aged appearance. This same technique, which includes layering the stain to give it depth, was applied in the master bath to the cabinets, the tub face and the mirrors.
On the iron stair railing, she began with a powder coated railing. A layering process was used. First comes a base coat of flat enamel. The next two layers are brushed by hand, finishing with highlights of metallic bronzes. The effect accents the railing to coordinate with the chandelier over the staircase.
In the power bath, the iron vanity is accented using the same techniques as the stair railing.
